Phase I of PROMOGED: 206 billion CFA francs in funding for seven regions, including 30 billion CFA francs for Saint-Louis

The Governor of the region of Saint-Louis installed this Thursday the Regional Technical Committee for the implementation of the objectives of PROMOGED (Project for the Promotion of Integrated Management and Economy of Solid Waste in Senegal). This Project aims at strengthening the governance of the sector in 07 regions in its first phase for a duration of 06 years (2020-2026).

It is financed to the tune of 206 billion CFA francs, including nearly 30 billion CFA francs for the region of Saint-Louis, where the construction of 50 infrastructures for solid waste management is planned. This project, implemented by the Ministry of Urban Planning, Housing and Public Hygiene, is in its first phase of execution. It aims to strengthen governance of the solid waste sector through inclusive and participatory management with a contribution from local authorities.

It is implemented by the State of Senegal with the support of the World Bank, the French Development Agency (AFD), the Spanish Cooperation and the European Investment Bank to the tune of 206 billion FCFA, according to Ibrahima Diagne, Director of PROMOGED. The duration of the project is 6 years (2020-2026). The areas of intervention concern 7 targeted regions (Dakar, Kolda, Sédhiou, Matam, Saint-Louis, Thiès and Ziguinchor), including 148 communes, i.e. 7 million inhabitants to be impacted. According to Ibrahima Diagne, 350 infrastructures are to be built (including 50 in the Saint-Louis region with an investment of more than 30 billion CFA francs), 15 landfills rehabilitated and thousands of jobs created.

The Regional Technical Committee, which was set up yesterday, is intended to be a consultation framework to support the implementation of project activities in the region. "It will be responsible for facilitating and coordinating the activities of the various working groups set up to reflect on land, the environmental and social component, the revitalization of the private sector, support for local entrepreneurship and innovation and support for the establishment of inter-communality," said the Governor of the region of Saint-Louis, Alioune Badara Sambe.
